Weimaraner Coat Genetics

I have gotten a lot of questions about Short Hair (LL), Short Hair Carrier (Ll), vs Long Hair (ll) coats. Let's break down the genetics and genetic possibilities:  Also Chart below

Short hair (LL): This genotype means the dog has two copies of the dominant short-haired gene. It will have a short coat and can only produce short-haired offspring when bred with another short-haired dog.

Short Hair carrier (Ll): This genotype means the dog has one dominant short-haired gene and one of the recessive long-haired gene. It will have a short coat because the short-haired gene is dominant but, it is a carrier of the long-haired gene. When bred with another carrier (Ll) or long hair (ll) this will likely produce several long-haired puppies. When bred to a full short hair (LL) it will produce all short haired pups with ~1/2 being full short hair (LL) and ~1/2 Long hair carriers (LI).

Long hair (ll): This genotype means the dog has two copies of the recessive long-haired gene. It will have a long coat and will produce long-haired pups when bred w/ another long hair (ll) or some short hairs when bred with a long-haired carrier (Ll).

The long-haired Weimaraner is not recognized separately from the short-haired Weimaraner in the United States. This means the American Kennel Club and NAVHDA do allow long hairs to be registered as Weimaraners. The coat length is the only difference between the breed variations. The AKC does consider the long coat to not conform to breed standard excluding them from show confirmation competition.
